CollegeNET is Named an InCommon Federation Sponsored Partner

Integration with Shibboleth Single Sign-On Technology Simplifies the Online Admissions Process for College Applicants and Staff Nationwide

Portland, OR, September 26, 2011

CollegeNET, Inc., a leading provider of web-based on-demand technologies for higher education, today announced that it has been selected as a sponsored partner of the InCommon® Federation. InCommon supports a common framework for trustworthy shared management of access to online resources based on the Shibboleth® System, a standards-based, open-source software package enabling single sign-on technology. CollegeNET's web-based Intelligent Connections® Application Processing System now integrates with Shibboleth single sign-on technology to help colleges and universities provide their applicants direct access to the school's admissions portal using their pre-established applicant ID – thus requiring applicants to remember and use only one username and password, and saving schools the cumbersome and costly process of mailing each applicant a separate set of ID numbers, URL and instructions.

CollegeNET's Intelligent Connections streamlines the admissions application process, from inquiry and submission through review and decision. InCommon's Shibboleth technology enhances this service by providing identity verification and password protection while simplifying the online admissions process for an institution's applicants and staff. The result is a secure method for providing individuals single sign-on access to protected or licensed online resources.

"Ninety-eight percent of our applicants create a CollegeNET application account and apply online," said Paul Ahlstrom, Assistant Director of Program Operations for University of Washington Admissions. "With the help of the Shibboleth technology, we can now leverage our applicants' account information to make many of the admission processes much more efficient and user-friendly. Thanks to this new system, we avoided sending out over 30,000 pieces of mail to students this year alone, which meant a significant savings in materials and labor."

"CollegeNET is the first admissions systems developer to join the InCommon sponsored partner ranks," said Patricia Summers, vice president, CollegeNET. "We're taking this latest step to save institutions time and resources — and help make applying to college simpler for students."

In addition to streamlining admissions, CollegeNET's web technologies address other key service points in higher education administration, including online letters of recommendation submission, tuition payment processing, commencement registration, scheduling, course and faculty evaluations, and alumni contributions.
